Mr. Berns began his legal career in the litigation group at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP in New York before starting his own firm that focused on securities and class action litigation. His practice has concentrated on financial services and commercial matters. He has obtained several multi-million dollar recoveries for defrauded investors and professionals in complex actions against broker-dealers, accounting firms, law firms and others. In the securities area, he has handled claims involving transactions in derivatives, swaps, options, debt and equity securities, and limited partnership interests. He has also defended senior corporate executives and financial institutions in complex litigation. He also advises clients on a variety of corporate, contract and employment matters.

From 1996 to 2002 Mr. Berns was Director, Office of Supervision, at the regulator of the Federal Home Loan Bank system, which provides wholesale banking services to 8,000 domestic banks and thrifts to support housing finance. His articles on bank regulatory policy issues have appeared in the American Banker. He joined Lane Sash & Larrabee LLP as a partner in September 2008.
